ECA WEBINAR: Cleanup to Clean Energy: How to Develop a Project on Federal Land
ECA Staff | 10/03/2023 Join ECA on Tuesday, October 31 at 2pm for an engaging
discussion on DOE's Cleanup to Clean Energy Initiative "Cleanup to Clean Energy: How to Develop a Project on Federal Land"
Following Secretary Granholm's announcement of the Cleanup to Clean Energy initiative this summer. ECA will be hosting a webinar to explain how the
development of these projects will unfold. The Cleanup to Clean Energy initiative will increase clean energy production by leasing DOE-owned land at several of its sites for new carbon emissions-free energy project. This initiative will use 70,000 acres of land at five of DOE's sites for
potential large-scale clean energy projects, or storage projects. The five sites include: - Hanford Site, Richland, WA
- Idaho National Laboratory, Idaho Falls, ID
- Nevada National Security Site, Nye County, NV
- Savannah River Site, Aiken,
SC
- Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, Carlsbad, NM
DOE Announces Second Round of Communities Local Energy Action Program (LEAP)
DOE | 09/27/2023 The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced more than $18 million in technical assistance services for the second round of Communities Local Energy Action Program (LEAP) to support 24-32 low-income, energy burdened communities in their clean energy transitions. Selected communities will be matched with DOE’s network of technical assistance providers who will assist them with developing local energy action plans that focus on one or more of the following areas: - Clean Energy Planning and Development
- Energy Efficient Buildings and Beneficial Electrification
- Clean
Transportation Planning and Investment
- Carbon Capture and Storage
- Critical Minerals Resources Potential from Energy Wastes and
By-products
- Community Resilience Microgrids
- New or Enhanced Manufacturing
- Advanced Nuclear Technology and Support for Existing Reactors
- Puerto Rico Community Resilience (open to Puerto Rico Communities Only)
Who Can Apply? Eligible applicants are low-income, energy burdened communities that are also either disadvantaged or experiencing direct economic impacts from the shift away from fossil fuels. Applicant teams must include at least one community-based organization and one local government or Tribal entity. When is the Application Due? Applications must be submitted no later than December 14, 2023 by 5 p.m. ET. More information about Communities LEAP and how to apply can be found

Check out ECA's latest report! DISPOSAL DRIVES CLEANUP: RE-ENERGIZING MOMENTUM FOR DISPOSAL SOLUTIONS FOR RADIOACTIVE WASTE This report calls on the Department of Energy to launch the initiative to develop the actual waste disposition approaches. The Department could potentially
save hundreds of billions of dollars in cleanup costs by using its available tools and implementing the report’s recommendations.
Interactive guide for communities and governments to help navigate nuclear waste cleanup The Energy Communities Alliance (ECA) recently released the Guide to Successful Environmental Cleanup, an interactive online resource that provides frequently asked questions, case studies, and recommendations regarding nuclear waste cleanup. To assist local government officials, their communities, and federal agencies in deciphering the complexities of the environmental cleanup process, ECA developed this guide to facilitate future successful cleanups.
NEW MEDIANucleCast: How One Academic Program is Building Nuclear Operators Dr. Howard Hall is the Director for the UT Institute for Nuclear Security. He holds a joint appointment with Consolidated Nuclear Security (Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, TN, and the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, TX), and serves as Professor in both the Department of Nuclear Engineering and the Bredesen Center For Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education. Professor Hall is also a Senior Fellow in Global Security Policy at the
Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy at the University of Tennessee. NucleCast: AI Technology and the NC3/Nuclear
Enterprise As Raft’s Senior Director of Data and AI, Angela Sheffield leads programs to build software, data, and AI solutions to deliver information and decision dominance in all operations conditions and all warfighting domains. Before joining Raft, Ms. Sheffield served as the Senior Program Manager for AI at the Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Research and Development, National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Energy. In that role, she led programs to advance the science of AI and develop novel capabilities to detect and deter nuclear weapons proliferation for mission partners in the DoD, Intelligence
Community, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of State.
