WHITE TESTIFIES BEFORE SENATE SUBCOMMITTEE ON FISCAL YEAR 2025 BUDGET REQUEST
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM) Senior Advisor William “Ike” White joined National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and NNSA Office of Naval Reactors leaders on Capitol Hill on May 22 to testify before the Senate Subcommittee on Strategic Forces Committee on Armed Services on their missions and commitments supporting DOE’s fiscal year 2025 budget request. In White’s opening statement, he emphasized EM’s commitment to cleaning up the environmental legacy of national defense programs that helped end World War II and the Cold War, stating that, “while our mission is rooted in the past, we’re focused on the future.” White’s testimony highlights EM’s 35 years
of progress, transformational results, steady progress planned for fiscal year 2025, support for national security missions and how EM is investing in the future. The budget request allows for continued improvement to the rigor of program and project management, as well as opportunities to progress cleanup safely and more efficiently.
WHITE HOUSE ANNOUNCES NUCLEAR POWER WORKING GROUP
ECA Staff | 05/30/2024 Yesterday, the Biden-Harris Administration hosted a White House Summit on Domestic Nuclear Deployment, highlighting the collective progress being made from across the public and private sectors. Under President Biden’s leadership, the Administration has taken a number of actions to strengthen our nation’s energy and economic security by reducing – and putting us on the path to eliminating – our reliance on
Russian uranium for civil nuclear power and building a new supply chain for nuclear fuel, including: signing on to last year’s multi-country declaration at COP28 to triple nuclear energy capacity globally by 2050; developing new reactor designs; extending the service lives of existing nuclear reactors; and growing the momentum behind new deployments. Recognizing the importance of both the existing U.S. nuclear fleet and continued build out of large nuclear power plants, the U.S. is also
taking steps to mitigate project risks associated with large nuclear builds and position U.S. industry to support an aggressive deployment target. Read the full release >>
NEW MEDIA: Gone Fission Nuclear Report: UF6 - A By-Product for Industry May 20, 2024 | S4 E10 The Department of Energy’s environmental cleanup program is more than tearing down aging, contaminated buildings. In this week’s episode of the Gone Fission Nuclear Report, we’ll take a look at another
dimension of cleanup--the conversion of depleted uranium hexafluoride—or UF6--at Paducah, Kentucky, and Portsmouth, Ohio. A by-product of the conversion process is hydrofluoric acid which has wide applications in industry--from pharmaceuticals and refrigerants to aluminum, plastics, electrical components and more. Hydrofluoric acid from the conversion process is sold to industry and is a revenue generator for the government. Our guest is Zak LaFontaine, DOE Program Director for the Depleted
Uranium Hexafluoride Conversion Program at Paducah and Portsmouth

Check out ECA's latest
report! DISPOSAL DRIVES CLEANUP: RE-ENERGIZING MOMENTUM FOR DISPOSAL SOLUTIONS FOR RADIOACTIVE WASTE This report calls on the Department of Energy to launch the initiative to develop the actual waste disposition approaches. The Department could potentially save hundreds of billions of dollars in cleanup costs by using its available tools and implementing the report’s recommendations.
Interactive guide for communities and governments to help navigate nuclear waste cleanup The Energy Communities Alliance (ECA) recently released the Guide to Successful Environmental Cleanup, an interactive online resource that provides frequently asked questions, case studies, and recommendations regarding nuclear waste cleanup. To assist local government officials, their communities, and federal agencies in deciphering
the complexities of the environmental cleanup process, ECA developed this guide to facilitate future successful cleanups.
