HOUSE ENERGY & WATER DEVELOPMENT SUBCOMMITTEE TO REVIEW APPROPRIATIONS BILL
The House Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee will hold a markup session of the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Bills on Monday, July 14 at 6:00pm. To see the markup at
that time, or a recording of the session afterwards, click here. A Full Committee Markup is yet to be scheduled in the House, as is the subcommittee and
full committee markups in the Senate Appropriations Committee. ECA will continue to provide updates on Energy and Water Appropriations as markups and hearings are scheduled. For more information on the appropriations process, click here.
Earlier this summer, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) completed a report on nuclear waste titled, "An Integrated Disposal Plan Could Help DOE Complete Its Cleanup Mission and Save Billions". ECA is hosting an informational webinar to learn more about the recommendations to develop DOE complex-wide analyses to assess the progress of its cleanup mission. These recommendations include; optimization models to identify optimal disposal pathways; a call to develop a complex-wide disposal plan; and the creation of a
forum for EM, cleanup sites, and disposal facility regulators to address regulatory constraints to optimal disposal approaches. GAO analyzed EM waste data, interviewed or requested information from all 15 EM sites, visited commercial nuclear waste disposal facilities, and developed a hypothetical model for optimizing transuranic waste disposal using EM data. Join ECA on July 24 at 2pm ET to learn more about the report. Speakers will include: - Facilitator: Seth Kirshenberg – Executive Director, Energy Communities Alliance
- Nathan Anderson, Director - Natural Resources and Environment, GAO
- Amanda Kolling, Assistant Director - Natural Resources and
Environment, GAO

Read the full story NRC may allow ANO to use decommissioning funds for early disposal work The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is considering allowing Entergy to use a portion of the decommissioning trust fund (DTF) for the Arkansas Nuclear One nuclear power plant to dispose of several major radioactive components (MRC) that have been taken out of service at the two-unit pressurized water reactor.
Entergy requested in November 2024 that the NRC exempt it from certain regulations, allowing the company to use funds from the Unit 1 DTF to dispose of two steam generators and one reactor vessel closure head (RVCH) that were removed from service in 2005, and to use funds from the Unit 2 DTF to dispose of two steam generators that were removed from service in 2000.
