Westchester County executive opposes Indian Point restart

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins is against the reopening of the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan. He has asked the Board of Legislators to adopt an act declaring the county's strong opposition to the plant's restart. The company overseeing the decommissioning recently suggested a restart could be possible. Holtec International estimates it would cost $10 billion to revive the 2,000-megawatt plant. It would also require state and federal approval.

WIPP Lessons for State and Local Officials Considering Hosting a Nuclear Waste Repository

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is the world’s only operating deep geologic repository for nuclear waste disposal and thus offers a unique case study to learn from as the US government likely embarks on a new effort to develop additional repositories. But data on WIPP is limited and not particularly accessible to state and local officials who want to learn more about the safety aspects and economic impacts of hosting such a facility. The Department of Energy could provide more such data on the WIPP experience to prospective states/locales to inform their decisions.

Nuclear fuel recycling gains traction for advanced reactors

Efforts to stand up nuclear fuel recycling projects accelerated this month with two major announcements — easing concern that the United States is moving too slowly to develop a supply chain for advanced reactors. Curio, based in Washington, D.C., said that national laboratory teams at Idaho, Oak Ridge, Pacific Northwest and Sandia completed “critical laboratory-scale demonstrations” of its NuCycle recycling process under the Department of Energy’s ARPA-E energy technology program.
