Moving Forward to Address Nuclear Waste Storage and Disposal

Today, President Obama authorized the Energy Department to move forward with planning for a separate repository for high-level radioactive waste resulting from atomic energy defense activities.

In a speech this afternoon at the Bipartisan Policy Center, Secretary Moniz announced several steps that the Department will take in moving forward on nuclear waste. The announcement of the Administration’s path forward includes the following components – 1) development of plans for a separate defense-only repository; 2) development of a consent-based siting process for both a defense-only repository and consolidated interim storage for commercial spent fuel; and 3) moving forward with planning for interim storage, consistent with the Administration’s Strategy for the Management and Disposal of Used Nuclear Fuel and High-Level Radioactive Waste.
