Hastings seeks answers about DOE reorganization
Annette Cary, Tri-City Herald August 5, 2011 Environmental cleanup of Hanford and other Department of Energy sites risk becoming less of a priority under a reorganization of DOE oversight of that work, according to Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash. After Energy Secretary Steven Chu made the DOE reorganization official Tuesday, Hastings sent him a letter Thursday asking for answers. "I write today to express my ongoing concerns with the department's reorganization that moves the Office of Environmental Management under the under secretary for nuclear security," he wrote. Former Sen. Domenici to launch new initiative to promote nuclear energy
Ben Geman, The Hill August 2, 2011 Former Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.), who was Capitol Hill's leading nuclear power advocate, is heading a new think tank initiative aimed at ensuring nuclear remains a viable option for the United States. Domenici and Warren "Pete" Miller - who led the Energy Department's nuclear research programs until late last year - will co-chair the project that's housed at the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC). "Through our partnership, we will address several key issues that will be important components to a healthy nuclear industry in the future," Domenici said in a statement. READ MORE
In Sweden, A Tempered Approach To Nuclear Waste Ingrid Becker, NPR July 28, 2011 At least two dozen countries around the globe get energy from nuclear power, yet not one has been able to pull off a permanent disposal site. Finding communities willing to live with such dangerous stuff has been a big sticking point. But in Sweden, two communities have stepped up, and are willing to take the country's waste. Like many countries, Sweden has had its share of political meltdowns over nuclear power. Protests stirred an uproar in the early 1980s when the Swedish nuclear industry simply decided where to begin testing for a possible geologic disposal site. But today, instead of deflecting protesters, the nuclear industry shuttles visitors by the busloads for guided tours of facilities. More than 1,100 feet below the surface, exotic machinery and copper tubes wide enough to fit two men fill an underground cavern carved from crystalline bedrock. READ MORE
Nuclear Waste Piles Up As Repository Plan Falters Craig Miller, NPR July 28, 2011 Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant on California's central coast has more than 1,300 tons of nuclear waste sitting on its back porch, waiting for pickup. The problem is, there's no one to pick it up. The 103 other reactors in the country are in the same bind -- it has now been more than 50 years since the first nuclear plant was switched on in the United States, and the federal government still hasn't found a permanent home for the nation's nuclear waste.
