House Debates Manhattan Project Park Act Yesterday, Final Vote Expected Today

Published: Thu, 09/20/12

The House of Representatives considered the Manhattan Project National Historical Park Act (H.R. 5987) for passage last night, with a final vote scheduled for today. The bill would establish the Manhattan Project National Historical Park in Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Los Alamos, New Mexico; and Hanford, Washington.

The bill was considered under "Suspension of the Rules," which is generally used to quickly pass non-controversial measures. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), however, put up a vigorous opposition to the bill.

At the conclusion of debate, Kucinich demanded a recorded vote (where each member's vote is individually declared and counted) instead of the anticipated voice vote.

The recorded vote is scheduled for today.

A video of the debate can be viewed here (click on the link at "7:50 PM").

The Senate version of the legislation (S. 3300) has been considered by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks, but has not yet passed out of that committee.
