DOE publishes written public comment on design of a consent-based siting process August 25, 2016
The Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy has recently released the first batch of written public
comments regarding the design of a consent-based siting process. From March to July of this year, the Department conducted a series of eight public meetings in cities across the country. These meetings facilitated discussion between DOE leadership, private citizens, Tribal Nations, cities, states, and other stakeholders on how to develop a consent-based approach to locating a national geological repository for spent fuel and high-level radioactive
waste.
The meetings were part of the DOE-lead effort to invite the public to participate in discussion of what a consent-based siting process should look like. Acting Assistant Secretary of the Office of Nuclear Energy, John Kotek, and a panel of subject-matter experts were present at each meeting to address public concerns voiced during the sessions. ECA’s Kara Colten,
Director of Nuclear Energy Programs, attended several meetings and spoke on behalf of ECA member communities’ interests on the matter.
Currently, the DOE has not yet begun the process of reviewing or selecting site candidates for a national repository. The Department expects to release a report later this year responding to concerns voiced during the meetings and written comments submitted throughout
the process.
A document of all public comment received by the DOE through July 1, 2016 regarding the design of a consent-based siting process can be found here.
