Nuclear waste repository goal of Energy Department plan, paving way out of Savannah River Site Aiken Standard December 20, 2016 A draft plan to build a new defense waste repository for nuclear materials that could replace
the defunct Yucca Mountain facility in Nevada has been released by the U.S. Department of Energy, giving hope for a future nuclear pathway out of South Carolina.
Barack Obama's administration in 2015 authorized the
Energy Department to begin developing a new facility, and the draft lays out a path forward to find a permanent resting place for tons of U.S. radioactive waste. That includes thousands of cubic meters of waste currently sitting at Savannah River Site.
Yucca Mountain is located in Nevada, adjacent to the Nevada National Security Site where nuclear weapons were tested during much of the Cold War. The project began construction in 2002. Funding was cut in 2011, shuttering the facility and leaving the U.S. without a solution for defense waste
disposal. >>Continue reading First Look at SMR Nuclear Power Project Los Alamos Monitor December 21, 2016 The Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) hosted a presentation Dec. 1 on NuScale Power’s small modular reactors.
The Board of Public Utilities directed DPU to explore whether to add a next-generation nuclear power facility to the county’s energy generation portfolio to meet
its goal to be carbon neutral by 2040.
DPU is a member of the Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS), making it eligible to buy into UAMPS Carbon Free Power Project, which uses NuScale’s small modular reactor technology.
Speakers included NuScale’s Chief Commercial Officer Mike McGough, Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Director of the Office of Civilian Nuclear Programs DV Rao, and Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS) Chief Executive Officer Doug Hunter. >>Continue reading |
