Third National Cleanup Workshop Set for Sept. 13-14 in Washington, D.C. Area

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Energy Communities Alliance, in cooperation with EM and the Energy Facility Contractors Group, is set to hold the third National Cleanup Workshop on Sept. 13-14, 2017, at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center in Alexandria, Va.

The workshop will bring together senior DOE executives and site officials, industry executives, and other stakeholders to discuss EM’s progress on the cleanup of the environmental legacy of the nation’s Manhattan Project and Cold War nuclear weapons program.

Approximately 600 attendees, including senior Department officials, Congressional leaders, DOE contractors, and state, Tribal and local government leaders, participated in the 2016 workshop — the largest EM-focused gathering in the D.C. area last year.  >>Continue reading

Nomination hearing of the Honorable Rick Perry for Secretary of Energy
U.S. Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee

The Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources will hold a hearing on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. EST in Room 366 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C.

The purpose of the hearing is to consider the nomination of the Honorable Rick Perry to be the Secretary of Energy.


The nomination hearing will be webcast live on the committee’s website. Witness testimony will be available online immediately before the start of the hearing.

Study says Idaho National Laboratory increases its contribution to Idaho's economy by 20.4 percent

A report released by the Idaho National Laboratory indicated that the INL contributes a positive value of $1.9 billion to Idaho’s total economic output, a $324 million increase from 2015.

The INL Fiscal Year 2016 Economic Impact Summary — which evaluates the total economic impact the INL’s operations have on Idaho’s economy — the INL accounted for more than 2.9 percent of statewide economic input, up from 2.5 percent in fiscal year 2015, and hired more than 480 employees in 2016, increasing its average salary from $88,635 to $92,660. The study also says INL operations added 11,276 jobs to Idaho’s economy in 2016.

WIPP employment levels expected to rise

The recent resumption of operations at Carlsbad’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant won’t result in any major fluctuations in employment, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Department of Energy spokesman Bill Taylor said the hundreds of jobs at WIPP are expected to remain stable.

“New hiring opportunities are expected to be at a normal pace now that WIPP has reopened,” Taylor said.

WIPP’s operating and managing contractor, Nuclear Waste Partnership, employs around 800.

Manhattan Project NHP: A new and budding partnership

In a little more than a year since the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Park Service (NPS) signed an agreement establishing Manhattan Project National Historical Park (Manhattan Project NHP), great progress has been made.

As the direct descendant of the Manhattan Engineer District, DOE owns and manages the federal properties at most of the major Manhattan NHP sites, including Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Hanford, Washington; and Los Alamos, New Mexico. The inauguration of the Manhattan NHP capped more than a decade of work and launched a new partnership between the agencies.  >>Continue reading
