Senate Approves Svinicki; Quorum Assured at Nuclear Regulatory Commission Bloomberg BNA June 26, 2017 The Senate June 26 approved Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Kristine Svinicki for a third term at the agency, just days before her current term
expired.
The Senate voted 88 to 9 to confirm Svinicki for another five-year term at the independent nuclear regulatory
agency.
Svinicki’s current five-year term is set to expire on June 30. If the Senate hadn’t acted quickly to confirm her, the NRC would have lost its quorum.

2017 The June 22 Energy 202 column, “Push to revive nuclear waste storage at Yucca Mountain riles lawmakers,” reported that the Energy Department has revived the plan for the high-level nuclear-waste repository at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. The plan is being opposed by three Nevada politicians. This important repository for nuclear waste was long blocked by former Nevada senator Harry Reid (D), using
his position as majority and then minority leader.
I visited Yucca Mountain during construction of the repository. Two things struck me. Standing atop the mountain, you can see for vast distances. There is no human activity in view other than the Yucca Mountain site and the nearby weapons test site, where more than 900 nuclear-weapons tests have been conducted. The area is brown with very little vegetation.

readingSCANA extends assessment of Toshiba's South Carolina nuclear plant Reuters June 27, 2017 SCANA Corp said on Monday it extended its assessment for six weeks of an unfinished U.S. nuclear power plant being built for the utility by a unit of Toshiba Corp, which is seeking to cut ties to the financially disastrous
project.
The South Carolina project, known as VC Summer, and a similar half-finished nuclear power plant in Georgia known as Vogtle, are billions of dollars over budget and pushed Toshiba's Westinghouse Electric Co LLC into Chapter 11 bankruptcy in
March.
SCANA said on Monday it would extend to Aug. 10 its assessment agreement under which the utility will pay temporarily for construction to continue at VC Summer without cost to Westinghouse. The agreement was scheduled to expire this week.

This follows an
earlier announcement by the U.S. Department of Energy that awarded nearly $67 million in nuclear energy research, facility access, crosscutting technology development, and infrastructure awards in 28 states. The GAIN nuclear energy vouchers provide advanced nuclear technology innovators with access to the extensive nuclear research capabilities and expertise available across the U.S. DOE national laboratories complex. Support of nuclear energy innovation, DOE-NE vouchers provide funds to assist
applicants seeking access to the world class expertise and capabilities available across the United States (U.S.) DOE complex.
“DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy established GAIN to provide the nuclear innovator community with assistance to address a range of technology needs,” said GAIN Director Rita Baranwal. “Through these vouchers, GAIN encourages accelerated nuclear technology innovation and promotes progress in the private sector."
