Trump vows to create 'American energy dominance'

President Trump is formally seeking a review of energy policies to help the nuclear power industry prosper.

Trump announced the review during a speech at the Energy Department’s headquarters, which came as part of the administration’s Energy Week celebration.


“The golden era of American energy is now underway. And I’ll go a step further: the golden era of America is now underway, believe me,” Trump told the fossil fuel industry executives, workers, lawmakers and others assembled. >>Continue reading

Senators introduce new bipartisan energy bill

The leading senators overseeing energy policy introduced a new version of their broad energy reform bill Thursday.

The legislation from Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairwoman Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and ranking member Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) has few changes from a bill the upper chamber passed last year.


The bill, dubbed the Energy and Natural Resources Act of 2017, has a wide variety of provisions, centered on energy efficiency, infrastructure and cybersecurity, as well as federal land management and sportsmen’s access. >>Continue reading

 
 
Energy & Commerce Members Highlight Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act

WASHINGTON, DC – The Energy and Commerce Committee today will vote on H.R. 3053, the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017, authored by #SubEnvironment Chairman John Shimkus (R-IL). H.R. 3053 provides practical reforms to the nation’s nuclear waste management policy to ensure the federal government’s legal obligations to dispose of spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste be fulfilled.

Los Alamos Lab starts bid process for multibillion-dollar management contract

Tuesday marked the start of a bidding process for new management to oversee Los Alamos National Laboratory, whose management contract with Los Alamos National Security LLC is set to expire next year.

National Nuclear Security Administration spokesman Greg Wolf said the announcement has nothing to do with safety issues that have been cited at the LANL. According to the Associated Press, those instances have included the mishandling of plutonium and radioactive waste at Los Alamos. >>Continue reading

Tests making progress for Idaho nuclear waste treatment

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Federal officials say testing of a small-scale version of a key component of an eastern Idaho radioactive waste treatment facility that has so far failed to operate is making progress at finding a solution.

The U.S. Department of Energy on Wednesday says results from testing at Hazen Research near Denver, Colorado, will be used during planned tests at the Idaho facility later this year.


The inability of the $600 million Integrated Waste Treatment Unit to process 900,000 gallons (3.5 million liters) of high-level nuclear waste stored at the 890-square-mile (2,300-sq. kilometer) Energy Department site in eastern Idaho has caused the federal agency to violate a 1995 agreement with Idaho. >>Continue reading
