CONTRACTING & ACQUISITION
No Hanford contracting plan yet, but DOE continues to seek interested companies
Tri-City Herald
July 29, 2017
The Department of Energy has yet to release its master plan for new Hanford contracts, but is continuing to ask for information from businesses interested in performing work at the nuclear reservation.

Late last week it put out a request for information from companies interested in performing part or all of a new management and services contract for the Hanford 222-S Laboratory. The last time the lab contract was awarded it was valued at $44.6 million over five years. >>Continue reading

Los Alamos County Submits Comments To NNSA On Draft Solicitation For LANL Site M&O Contract Competition
Los Alamos Daily Post
July 28, 2017
Both County Council Chair David Izraelevitz and County Manager Harry Burgess submitted letters to NNSA Wednesday outlining concerns about the draft solicitation for LANL site management and operating contract competition, just ahead of the July 26 comment deadline.

Burgess’ letter highlighted primary concerns that the County would like to see addressed, and the letter from Chair Izraelevitz offered more details and attached documentation.

Burgess listed 13 points in his letter, which ranged from concerns over the structure of the contract to a lack of recognition and language in the solicitation about the important relationships that must be maintained and funded with the community, businesses, schools and Northern New Mexico partners. >>Continue reading

Piketon, DOE spar over proposed on-site waste site
Chillicothe Gazette

Officials from the village met with a representative of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency July 10 to discuss conclusions reached by a third-party environmental consultant, The Ferguson Group’s Karl Kalbacher, who the village hired to evaluate plans for a 100-acre disposal cell that would handle low-level contaminated waste from the cleanup work. >>Continue reading

Letter to the Editor: WIPP's recovery ongoing
Current Argus
July 30, 2017
While we are all extremely pleased that shipments to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (the Department of Energy’s underground repository for defense-generated transuranic waste near Carlsbad, New Mexico) have resumed, we need to make certain that they are not halted again in the future due to a failure to address maintenance issues. During WIPP’s recovery phase, resources were devoted toward making necessary repairs to return the underground portion of the facility to an operational status, but aging infrastructure has not been replaced. WIPP has now been in existence for 35 years. The environment beneath the surface is corrosive, and little maintenance money has been devoted toward improvements to the site’s infrastructure, particularly on the surface. >>Continue reading
