DOE wants study to prevent collapse of 2nd Hanford radioactive waste tunnel Tri-City Herald August 1, 2017 The Department of Energy plans to step up monitoring of a Hanford tunnel storing highly radioactive waste while it studies ways to keep it from collapsing.
It proposes convening a “best and brightest” expert panel to analyze options for the intact
tunnel at the nuclear reservation’s PUREX plant, it said in a report delivered Tuesday to the Washington State Department of Ecology.
More study is not what the state expected DOE to propose. The state issued a legal order in May requiring DOE to submit a plan to stabilize the structure of both the
plant’s intact tunnel and another waste-storage tunnel at PUREX that was discovered partially collapsed May 9. >>Continue reading DOE defends Portsmouth waste disposal site
planning Chillicothe Gazette July 31, 2017 PIKETON - The U.S. Department of Energy is standing firm, saying the location of an on-site waste disposal facility is both safe and
viable.
The
DOE plans to locate the waste disposal site on its property, which formerly housed the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, near Piketon. DOE says extensive work was done to make sure safety and viability were preserved long-term.
Robert E. Edwards III, the manager of the Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office for DOE, sent a four-page letter Friday to Piketon Mayor Billy Spencer responding to concerns voiced by village officials about what they see as flaws
in the plan to build the cell. >>Continue reading S.C. utilities stop building $16B V.C. Summer nuclear expansion Charlotte Business
Journal July 31, 2017 S.C.Electric & Gas and Santee Cooper have decided to stop construction at the proposed V.C. Summer Nuclear Station expansion, but customers could remain on the hook for up to $9 billion already spent on the project.
Santee Cooper’s board acted first, announcing it would proceed with neither of the two nuclear reactors under construction at the
site at this time. SCE&G, a subsidiary of SCANA Corp. (NYSE:SCG) reacted shortly thereafter, acceding to that decision. >>Continue
reading Finland's solution to nuclear
waste storage may set an example for the world WBFO July 31,
2017 Seven decades into the age of nuclear power, the United
States has yet to solve the problem of waste. While the US argues and dawdles, however, Finland says it has found an answer — it plans to build one of the world’s first long-term nuclear waste storage facilities in a labyrinth of underground tunnels.
The Onkalo Nuclear Waste Repository is
planned for an island off of Finland’s western coast. According to nuclear policy researcher Matti Kogo, once Finland buries its waste in the tunnels, not much else will need to be done. >>Continue
reading Transatomic Awarded Second DOE Voucher for Experimental Nuclear Research Benzinga July 31, 2017 Leading nuclear technology developer Transatomic Power Corporation has been awarded a second voucher to complete work with the Argonne National Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced last month.
The voucher, awarded through the DOE's Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) initiative, will
experimentally verify the physical properties of the fuel salt for Transatomic's molten salt reactor technology, and will be conducted at the Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, IL.
"We're very grateful for the support of the DOE's GAIN initiative as we progress through our technology development process," said Transatomic CEO Dr. Leslie Dewan. "The work we'll perform
with Argonne will be of immense value to both Transatomic and the molten salt technology community as a whole, and the GAIN initiative makes it all possible for us." >>Continue reading |
