Scientific Journal Highlights ECA Report on Waste Disposition
ECA Staff | October 26, 2017

The scientific journal, Nature, has recently published an article titled, "Reclassify waste to shift the nuclear landscape." The article references an Energy Communities Alliance (ECA) report which asserts that by clarifying the definition of high-level waste, DOE could save up to $40 billion over the lifetime of its cleanup program -- more than 15% of the estimated $257 billion price tag on cleanup across the complex.

The Nature article contends that nuclear waste "should be managed on the basis of the risk it poses and not the process that produced it." It argues that many of the wastes currently classified as High-Level Waste (HLW) may meet the criteria to be handled and stored as other forms of waste, such as Transuranic (TRU) waste or Low-level Waste (LLW), thus saving DOE considerable time and money.

CONTRACTING & ACQUISITION
DOE/NNSA Issues RFP For LANL Management & Operating Contract
Los Alamos Daily Post | October 25, 2017

DOE/NNSA issued today the solicitation/Request for Proposal (RFP) for a full and open competition for the management and operating (M&O) contract for Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

In May 2016, NNSA extended the period of performance of the LANL M&O contractor, Los Alamos National Security, LLC (LANS), through Sept. 30, 2018. The pursuit of a full-and-open competition will provide the Department the best opportunity for improving the terms and conditions of the contract to incentivize mission performance and cost savings for the taxpayer.

This competition also provides the Department the opportunity to incorporate recommendations from Congressionally-directed studies and evaluations of the governance, efficiency, and effectiveness of the Department’s NNSA Laboratories and other sites.
