Today, The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released its fiscal year (FY) 2020 Budget in Brief, detailing the President's budget request for the agency.
In total, the budget request for DOE is $31.7 billion, or approximately 3.98 billion less than FY2019 enacted levels. The Budget in Brief breaks down DOE funding by
appropriation and organization. Highlighted below are top line figures for some of DOE's major program offices and initiatives:
National Nuclear Security Administration
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) received a FY 2020 request for $16.49 billion, $1.26 million or 8.3% above FY 2019 enacted levels. Weapons Activities and Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation received plus-ups of 11.8% and 3.3%, respectively. The Naval Reactors program saw a decrease of 7.8%.
Environmental Management
The Office of Environmental Management (EM) received $6.47 billion in the FY 2020 budget request, a decrease of $706 million or 9.8% from FY 2019 enacted levels.
Nuclear Energy
The President requested $824 million for the Office of Nuclear Energy (NE), over $500 million less than FY 2019 enacted levels, or a 37.9% decrease.
Science
The Office of Science received $5.5 billion in the budget request, a decrease in $1.04 billion or 15.8% from FY 2019 enacted levels.
Yucca Mountain and Interim Storage
Defense nuclear waste disposal efforts reserved a $26 million request for FY 2020, $4 million less than the President's FY 2019 budget request. Non-defense nuclear waste disposal received $90 million - on par with the FY 2019 budget request. The Yucca Mountain and Interim Storage program received no funding in enacted FY 2019 appropriations.
Legacy Management
The President requested $303 million for the Office of Legacy Management (LM). This is an increase from FY 2019 funding levels of over $144 million, or 90.7%.
