ENERGY COMMUNITIES ALLIANCE
Communities, industry leaders, and government officials celebrate EM's 30th anniversary at 2019 National Cleanup Workshop
ECA Staff | 10/03/2019
In September, ECA, in cooperation with the Energy Facility Contractors Group (EFCOG) and DOE, held the fifth annual National Cleanup Workshop. The Workshop brought together around 700 attendees from DOE, local, state, and tribal government officials, and industry leaders. Thank you to all of the sponsors who made this meeting possible.
The Workshop overlapped with the Office of Environmental Management's (EM) 30th anniversary, which shaped the theme of the conference: Advancing Goal-Oriented Nuclear Waste Cleanup, Today and Tomorrow. Sessions at the Cleanup Workshop reflected on EM success across the complex and lessons learned for the future of cleanup.
Under Secretary for Science Paul Dabbar provided the keynote address highlighting DOE's priorities. He emphasized EM's progress in the cleanup mission, which has made land available to local communities for economic development. He also
noted significant projects for DOE such as the contaminant plume at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Tank Farms in Hanford, and Environmental Corrective Actions at the Nevada National Security Site. Dabbar also discussed the Department’s efforts to tackle the challenge of getting waste out of tanks sooner.
Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) presented his perspectives on Hanford and DOE priorities, including the EM budget. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN) presented remarks on the legislative challenges and opportunities for the EM Program. Attendees also heard from Congressional staffers on September 12 immediately following the Senate's markup of the energy appropriations bill. The conversation largely focused on the
expected final numbers negotiated between the House and Senate for the upcoming fiscal year.
Presentations are now archived online here, and videos of each session will be available soon.
SAVE THE DATE: The 2020 National Cleanup Workshop will be held September 16-18, 2020, in Alexandria, VA.

ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANUP
Energy Secretary tells Hanford workers their cleanup work is making the Northwest safer
Tri-City Herald | 10/01/2019
Energy Secretary Rick Perry promised to return when he made his first visit to Hanford in 2017, just months after being sworn in.
Tuesday he was back to congratulate workers at the nuclear reservation on completing important work that protects the Northwest environment and to remind the region that environmental cleanup work is getting done.
The latest accomplishment was getting 35 cubic yards of highly radioactive sludge out of underwater storage in a 64-year-old concrete basin.
