Testing for radioactive contamination to begin soon at Piketon area schools and community
ABC6 | 10/23/2019
Families in the Scioto Valley School District want to know when a private company will start testing for radioactive contaminants.
The U.S. Department of Energy is paying for the testing.
Superintendent Wes Hairston said the school board did the right thing when they closed Zahns Corner Middle School in May after radioactive contaminants were found. Hairston is pushing for work being done at the Gaseous Diffusion Plant to be halted until the testing is complete. Hairston said while many want the testing done quickly, he reminds community members it’s more “more critical to get it right
than to do it fast.”
The Department of Energy says an independent company will test a six-mile radius around the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant after trace amounts of enriched uranium were found over the summer at the school.
Many living around the plant welcome the third party testing of the area, saying it will give more credibility to the DOE's testing of the area.
