NUCLEAR WEAPONS
The Potential Costs of Expanding U.S. Strategic Nuclear Forces If the New START Treaty Expires
Congressional Budget Office | 8/25/2020
The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) between the United States and Russia will expire in February 2021 unless both parties agree to an extension, which could last for up to five years. That treaty places limits on the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads (1,550) and delivery systems (800 missile launchers and bombers, 700 of which may be deployed at any given time) that each
country may field.
How and when the United States or Russia would respond to the expiration of New START is unclear. To help policymakers understand the budgetary implications of one potential course of action the United States could take, the Congressional Budget Office was asked to examine the potential costs that the Department of Defense (DoD) might incur if the United States chose to increase its strategic nuclear
forces to levels that are roughly consistent with the limits under three earlier arms control treaties.

PUBLIC SAFETY
Piketon middle school still shuttered amid contamination fears
Columbus Dispatch | 8/23/2020
Students at Zahn’s Corner Middle School, which was closed in May 2019 after radioactive americium was detected across the street by a U.S. Department of Energy air monitor, will begin classes Monday divided between the high school and elementary school in the Scioto Valley Local School District. The district is pushing for a new school. Parents and school officials remain worried about contamination in
the area. DOE maintains that the school is safe.
“Results from all sampling showed no radioactivity detected above naturally occurring levels, and thus no cause for public health concern. There is no public health or safety risk from radioactive material preventing the opening of Zahn’s Corner Middle School,” the DOE said in a statement.
Still, the community has pushed for independent testing, which is still pending.
