Record of Decision for the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Plutonium Pit Production at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is issuing a Record of Decision (ROD) on the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Plutonium Pit Production at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina (SRS EIS). The final SRS EIS was published on September 25, 2020 (85 FR 60458) for a 30-day review period. NNSA also published a Notice of availability of the final SRS EIS in
the Federal Register on September 30, 2020 (85 FR 61741). The SRS EIS is available on the NNSA National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) website at https://www.energy.gov/nnsa/nnsa-nepa-reading-room. The SRS EIS ROD documents NNSA’s decision to re-purpose the Mixed-oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility (MFFF) into the Savannah River Plutonium Pit Production Facility (SRPPF) to produce at least 50 pits per year with surge
capacity of at least 80 pits per year.
In addition, NNSA is issuing a new amended Record of Decision (AROD) on the Complex Transformation Supplemental Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (CT SPEIS), implementing the two-site option for plutonium pit production. The first site chosen was Los Alamos National Laboratory, the second site, identified in this AROD, is SRS. This AROD is based on the conclusions in the final
Supplement Analysis of the CT SPEIS, published in January of 2020. The final SA is also available on the NNSA NEPA Reading Room website referenced above.

Trump Administration Works with State of California to Advance Next Steps For Cleanup At ETEC

Today, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) announced several significant steps to continue progress in the cleanup of Area IV of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) in Ventura County, California.
In May, DOE and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) signed an Order to demolish ten buildings at the site comprising the former Radioactive Materials Handing Facility (RMHF) complex. Nine of the buildings have been safely demolished and work on the tenth is expected to be completed in 2020.
DOE is announcing the signing of an Amendment to the May 2020 Order on Consent with the State of California to demolish the eight remaining DOE-owned buildings at the former Energy Technology and Engineering Center (ETEC) research site in Area IV of the SSFL. The action will fulfill DOE’s commitment to complete building demolition at ETEC.
